A good place to start is the block type of mold.  The silicone should touch all sides of the mold box where the part to be created is positioned.  When doing the multiple piece block mold, removing the original part is done by cutting the mold.  For building restoration, experienced molders use the glove mold.  This is done by brushing, curing and removing the silicone.  A shell of the desired shape is created in a cast glove mold.  The pattern is created by pouring the silicone into the shell.  Modelling clay, plaster or fibreglass usually makes up cast glove molds.

Having all required materials at hand is always part of the preparation.  The instructions provided with the materials should be followed carefully.  It is necessary to pour the mixed silicone quickly into the mold box.  Placing vent holes in the mold that allows filling the mold with casting liquids can be the most difficult area of the work.  Perfect colored parts result from the use of clear urethane resin and the appropriate color and amount.
